Overview

The Training and Capacity Building domain of ASK T & L draws its existence from the mission of the organization i.e. “to be a capacity building institution which enables CBOs, intermediary organizations and corporate to achieve and sustain visible socio-economic development “and its core belief “in the vast latent human potential which it endeavors to develop through its capacity building efforts”.

We engage with CBOs, NGOs, INGOs, Donors & Corporate foundations and assist them in bridging the capacity gaps which constraints them in achieving their goal and objectives. We strive to minimize this gap by providing expertise and hand holding support and equipping partners with the knowledge and skills necessary to deal with a wide array of socio-economic development issues across the country and internationally.

What We Do

In this highly competitive time, if an organization has to sustain, it has to be relevant, effective, efficient, impactful and sustainable. Through this domain ASK T & L assists organizations in realizing these milestones by facilitating various need based Organizational Development Processes in a strategic & professional manner which include facilitating participatory organizational & context analysis, facilitating strategic & perspective planning, redesigning mission statements, organizational approach & strategies, identity & character, thematic priorities, geographical & operational priorities, organization structure, governance & management, developing & strengthening relevant organizational systems & mechanism including policies & procedures (like HR, Gender, Finance, M & E, Disability, HIV/AIDS etc), management systems (programmatic, financial, human resource etc). The domain also helps the organizations to develop operational plans for implementation of the strategic & perspective plans.
Delivering change has become the parameter for successful projects in the present context and NGOs are being accounted based on their performances on delivering results. However, non-profit sector lacks the desired capacities which are essential to manage & deliver results. The domain provides assistance to the NGOs in streamlining their project management systems (Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, Reporting & Documentation) which focuses on bringing change in the lives of the communities that they serve.
Efficiency & effectiveness is directly proportionate to skill and getting skilled personnel is a serious challenge in the non-profit sector. Skill building is thus an inherent need in the non-profit sector and thus always dependent on an external agency to even facilitate such skill building exercises internally. Therefore, ASK T&L Training and Capacity Building domain facilitates “Generic” as well as Thematic Training of Trainers (ToT) which helps in creating pool of trainers within the organization, strengthening internal facilitation which intern leads for smooth capacity building process and effective implementation of program
Today development sector is all about delivering mandates in a team or collective which demands soft skills along with other technical skills relevant to their programme. ASK T&L Training and Capacity Building domain facilitates various skill development and behavioral change capacity building programs which are focused in developing the required soft skills and bringing behavioral change among the organization staff on their personal effectiveness. Some of the key types of behavioral capacity building interventions facilitated by the domain includes leadership, Supervisory/Managerial skills, Communication and Team building & Interpersonal Relationship.
ASK T & L Training and Capacity Building domain helps organizations create conceptual clarity and understanding on the process and approaches of development, importance of participation, including methods of PRA, group formation, Facilitation skills, micro planning, participatory monitoring, among others. It also helps the organization in formation and capacity Building of Community Based Organizations. NGOs are assisted to decide and review models of community based organizations. Training on capacity building of CBOs is aimed at developing their know-how and skills to understand and perform their roles effectively and sustain their efforts at the community level through following an inclusive & participatory process.
Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) is a key pillar of Indian democratic system that has been progressively developing year after year. However due to capacity gaps at different levels at times these institutions many a times are not able to perform effectively. ASK T&L Training and Capacity Building Domain; therefore, facilitates various trainings for both NGOs as well as PRI members for making the local self-governments function effectively. Capacity building inputs under this category includes Training on Panchayati Raj Institution (power, functions, roles & responsibilities of leaders & members), gram sabha, good governance, leadership development for PRI members, various government flagship schemes & programs etc.
Disasters act as a big obstacle for the development of a nation and in last couple of decades, the nature, intensity, frequency of natural hazards have taken a sharp rise. The modern approach of Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) has been considered a successful means to minimize the effects of disaster. ASK T&L in past one decade had developed expertise on facilitating CMDRR and has supported NGOs in various ways. Some of the key inputs we provide under this theme include Training & field facilitation for participatory Disaster Risk Analysis, Disaster Risk Reduction, Facilitating Participatory Long-term Development Planning & Short-Term Contingency Planning for Disaster Risk Reduction, Training & field facilitation for developing Community based Monitoring mechanism etc.
One of the most prominent and widely used approaches for ensuring empowerment of all, particularly the marginalized & excluding cross sections of our society, is the ‘Rights Based Approach’, however many development actors lack the know-how and skills to understand, adopt and integrate this approach within their organizational and programmatic functions. Through the domain we assist the NGOs & CBOs in conceptualizing and using the Rights Based Approach and its various processes, methods and tools.
The domain also has the expertise on facilitating capacity building sessions and providing capacity building inputs on various themes such as Gender & Development, HIV/AIDS, and Micro Enterprise Development etc.
ASK T&L helps organizations and CBOs in institutionalizing the Business Development Service mechanism within the institutions. It focuses on building the knowledge base of the staff and enhancing their capability, developing systems of providing BDS and taking it to a logical end.

Our Approach

Result Oriented
We promote result orientation in development interventions. Thus, all of the Capacity Building inputs facilitated by the Training and Capacity Building Domain are methodically designed and executed in a result oriented manner thereby creating an environment of bringing positive changes.

Process Oriented
Process is a critical phenomenon in achievement of results and ASK T&L believes in adopting process oriented approach in all its interventions. This is being practiced while designing and implementing all training and capacity building interventions within the organization.

Participatory
The Training & Capacity Building domain engages with the partner in analyzing, planning and executing capacity building intervention. At the same time, the trainings & workshops are also made highly participatory in nature which is based on the principles of adult learning.

Institutionalization of Learning
From our experience we have learnt that for a sustainable change it is important that the learning gets institutionalized and thus our methodology and the process of engagement during trainings and capacity building focuses on the same.

Utilization Focused
The Training and Capacity Building inputs are being designed and executed with emphasis on its utilization by making it more practical and realistic. Examples used during the trainings are as per the level of understanding of the participants and their context. The emphasis is on how the inputs can be utilized in their day to day functioning.

Field Accompaniment & Handholding
This is a very unique means used by ASK T&L Training and Capacity Building Domain for capacity building wherein the approach is of facilitating on job training & learning by way of demonstration, practice, input & feedback.

We Facilitate

We facilitate trainings on all the subjects that we have mentioned in the “What we do” section, which specifically focuses in bringing knowledge, skill, attitude & practice level changes. The trainings are highly participatory, activity oriented and thought provoking.
When the need is to evolve or develop something by the end of a program like strategic plans, project plans, monitoring systems, operational plans, policies etc., we facilitate the same through a workshop setting wherein we create an enabling environment for the participants to come up with their thoughts/ideas, discuss & deliberate on issues and reach to conclusions & decisions and thus actively participating in development of the end product.Post Covid-19, due to the challenges of travelling to the organizations, bringing participants physically together at one place and conducting face-to-face trainings because of the health & safety risks associated with it, and the travel & other restrictions by the government, ASK Training & Learning developed effective methodologies for “Virtual Trainings” using online platforms and continue conducting such remote trainings with a number of organizations. These trainings also remained as useful and effective as any direct training. Thus the domain has been able to equip itself to adapt with the changing context and to continue providing the same quality inputs to the development sector.
We facilitate exposure/exchange visits which include field exposure trips as well as in house deliberations. This has been a very successful means of facilitating learning.
We facilitate issue based consultations/meetings/discussions wherein our role is to keep the discussion on track, facilitate discussions & helping to reach to concrete strategic conclusions/decisions.
We assist in developing need based & customized IEC & facilitative documents like training manuals, field guides or guidelines on all the subjects as mentioned in the “What we do” section.
